Abstract

God created man to worship Him and people cannot find personal fulfillment apart from the glad submission of themselves in worshipful obedience to God. Devotional education leads to the development of the right relationship between man and God and the achievement of the purpose of creation. Devotional education has principles, goals and methods that indicate the purpose of such education and how to reach this goal. Despite efforts made, the Qur'anic aspects and the narrations concerning devotional education have not been explored from the perspective of educational principles. The purpose of this article is to identify the principles of devotional education based on the Qur'an and hadiths using an analytical-inferential method. By examining the verses and hadiths, nine principles for devotional education were identified and explained. These include: The principle of strengthening and instilling faith, the principle of strengthening God's love, the principle of strengthening the spirit of gratitude, the principle of strengthening insight and awareness of worship, the principle of facilitation, the principle of paying attention to the spirit of worship, the principle of gradation, the principle of continuity, and the principle of moderation. These principles guide the teacher in the process of devotional education inasmuch as they explain the quality and manners of devotional actions to attain the spirit and reality of servitude.
